 1. Seal cracks.

2. Caulk around door frames and windows and around pipes where they enter the house to reduce incoming cold.

3. Wrap all pipes in unheated areas. Pipes in unheated areas such as the crawl space under the house, attic, garage and unheated basement should be wrapped to prevent freezing. Use insulating tape and wrap it over the entire length of exposed pipe. You can also use flexible molded pipe sleeves. Cover all valves, pipe fittings, etc. with insulating tape or fiberglass. We do not recommend electric heat tape for insulating water lines.

4. Protect outdoor pipes and faucets. In some homes, the outside faucet has its own shut-off in the basement in addition to the shut-off valve for the entire house. If you have a separate valve for outside faucets, close the valve, remove hoses, and drain the faucet. If you do not have a separate valve, wrap the outside faucets (hose bibs) in newspapers or rags covered with plastic.

5. Drain in-ground sprinklers. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the best way to do this.

6. Open cupboard doors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Water lines supplying these rooms are frequently on outside walls. Any air leaks in siding or insulation can cause these pipes to freeze.

7.  Leaving the doors open when the temperature is below freezing allows them to get more heat.

8. Let faucets farthest from the street or at the end of the system drip in below-freezing weather. This will add to your bill, but the amount will be nothing compared to the inconvenience and cost if the meter or pipes freeze.

9. Turn off all your water and drain your system if you are leaving for a long time. Turn off the main shut-off valve, then turn on all faucets, sinks tubs, showers, etc. and flush the toilets. Turn off the water heater. Then go back to the main shut-off valve and remove the plug so it can drain completely. Leaving your furnace on a low setting while you are gone helps, but it may not prevent freezing.

NASA Astronaut, Food Scientist Discuss Thanksgiving in Space

NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn and Vickie Kloeris, the agency's manager of the International Space Station food system, will discuss the space station's Thanksgiving menus in live satellite interviews from 7- 8:30 a.m. EST Wednesday, Nov. 27.

The interviews will be carried on NASA Television.

Six crew members will enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner floating aboard the International Space Station in orbit 260 miles above Earth. Their menu will include traditional holiday favorites with a space-food flair, such as irradiated smoked turkey, thermostabilized yams and freeze-dried green beans. The crew's meal also will feature NASA's cornbread dressing, home-style potatoes, cranberries, cherry-blueberry cobbler and the best view from any Thanksgiving table.

Marshburn is a veteran of two spaceflights. He logged 146 days in space as part of space station expeditions 35 and 36 beginning in December 2012. Marshburn spent 16 days in space in July 2009 as part of space shuttle mission STS-127, a space station assembly mission. He has conducted four spacewalks totaling more than 24 hours.

NASA food scientist Vickie Kloeris has been involved in space food development and production since 1985. She has managed the space station food system since January 2000 and is responsible for every aspect of the station's food system including all U.S. flight food shipments and new food item development. She also manages the food systems laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA is researching and developing ways to extend the shelf-life of food needed for deep space missions, and how to minimize the volume of packaging. The agency also is using the International Space Station as a laboratory to learn how to grow plants in space.

Our basement water extraction process is a critical step in a water cleanup operation after basement flooding. A properly executed water extraction will successfully remove water  and should prevent excess damage. Even a small amount of moisture left in a basement may promote a health risk to your family, such as mold growth, lung cancer or sinus infection. Prior to proper water extraction, our water damage cleanup technician will check the affected areas to determine the extent of the water damage in your basement.

What is water extraction?

Water extraction is the the process of safely removing the excess water in the basement or another affected area. This is mostly done by the use of gas-powered submersible pumps. The use of wet-dry vacuum units is also good fit for this this type of extraction. Which extraction equipment to use depends on the depth and the severity of the water damage. The use of electrical pump is never advisable for obvious safety reasons, electric shock might occur. We don’t recommend the use of a vacuum cleaner; you would only ending up buying a new one.

Use a pump or wet vacuum

The pump or dry-wet vacuum must be ran across the carpet or other flooring in the same manner as vacuuming a floor. The task of removing as much water as possible should completed first. This will facilitate the drying process and help with full restoration and recovery as well. After extracting the water, a considerable amount of moisture will be left on surfaces, this must be removed through circulating the air within the basement, by opening windows or air opening or cavities on basement walls. The removal of excess moisture can be facilitated with the use of high-speed fan, blower, air mover or dehumidifier to accelerate the process and to limit mold growth. The units must be regularly moved along the basement for several hours to make sure that the whole area is completely dried. Allowing at least two days is needed for the complete drying of the whole area.

When to call a professional

If your basement is heavily flooded, it is best to contact a water damage and restoration company for assistance. They will restore your basement by executing a full water extraction. Our company employs professionals and uses specialized tools for extracting flood and sewage water, such as the truck mount extraction unit. This unit can remove a huge amounts of water from the basement in minutes, there by speeding up the water damage and restoration process. Other equipment we use is the portable commercial extraction machine. It is a heavy- duty type vacuum unit used for large homes and commercial property water clean ups.

Remember that standing water will get into places in your basement or crawl spaces that you might not think about and it must be properly treated. If left water in these areas it can be a breeding ground for mold and other fungi. This will pose even grater health risk to your family members.

Once water has been removed

Once the water removal is finished, our water extraction profession will look for any wet materials that need to be removed as well. This can be carpet padding or wood flooring. This task is accomplished by using moisture meters to detect wet material.

Basement water extraction is one of the steps taken in a successful water damage treatment. However, it is always better to call a professional water extraction company and not take such a serious task on yourself.
